To the left, Adam Rothman examines ship records with his student, Alana Hendy (SFS, '21). At a later date, she worked with the Digital Scholarship team in Lauinger Library to create her 1838 Sale Timeline from archival materials in the Georgetown Slavery Archive. The timeline shows that the history of the 1838 sale spans nearly half a century, from the first discussions among the Jesuits about the lack of profitability of the Maryland plantations in the 1810s to the final payments on the transaction in the 1860s.
